A very realistic interpretation of one of the bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War.
A brutal and realistic war film focuses on the lives of a squad of 14 U.S. Army soldiers of B Company, 3rd Battalion, 187th Infanty Regiment, 101st Airborne Division during the brutal 10 day (May 11-20, 1969) battle for Hill 937 in the A Shau Valley of Vietnam as they try again and again to take the fortified hill held by the North Vietnamese, and the faults and casualties they take every time in which the battle was later dubbed "Hamburger Hill" because enemy fire was so fierce that the fusillade of bullets turned assaulting troops into shreded hamburger meat.
*minor spoilers*

"Hamburger Hill" is probably one of the most realistic depictions of war on film. However, that is not to say it is one of the best. A recreation of an incident in Vietnam, it deserves respect for making such an honest attempt to do justice to its subject. Yet, as a whole, the film is not particularly special or memorable. There are some good combat scenes, but the parts in-between often slow down the movie. The material doesn't really offer any new insights into the combat experience, and pales in comparison to "Platoon," "Saving Private Ryan," or "Full Metal Jacket." It's an unremarkable experience. One that I can respect, but not one I can watch repeatedly.

At its best, it does a reasonably good job at demonstrating what war must be like. While graphically violent, none of it seems gratuitous or exploitive, except perhaps for the infamous head-exploding scene. Much of it feels more like a documentary instead of a feature film. Like "Platoon," it pays attention to the day-to-day experience of the soldiers. Some of it is good; this is one of the few films to address the issue of racism in the armed forces. However, at other times, we just get impatient and wish for some bombs to drop. None of the actors are big names, with the possible exception of a young Don Cheadle, but they all do their best. Courtney B. Vance, in particular, is good as a no-nonsense medic.

There is a good reason why "Hamburger Hill" is relatively unknown: it just doesn't add much to the war genre. In the end, I am reminded of an educational film; the subject is important, but this movie is not the best cinematic treatment it has received. It may be used as a stepping stone to other, more worthy books and films about Vietnam, but it must make way to its betters. It's too little, too late. However, there are moments of real power, such as the final image of a soldier's tear-stained face against the blood-red sky. That is an indication the filmmakers went into this project with the most honorable of intentions. For that, they are to be commended.

**1/2 (out of ****)

Released by RKO Pictures (thru Paramount)
This is one of the bloodiest war films i have ever seen. The movie manages to be very entertaining but is boring at times. My personal favorite part is the last half hour it shows realistic and detailed blood wounds and killing. I reccomend this movie to just about anyone most people will enjoy this masterpeice.

The hill had no value in itself, the allied forces only attacked it because the North Vietnamese Army forces were there. Once they withdrew to their safe havens in Laos and Cambodia where allied forces were forbidden to go there was no reason to keep troops on it. One of the criticisms of the allied high command is that their strategy was more akin to World War 2 and Korea where every piece of territory seized was a step closer to victory. In Vietnam merely occupying territory was meaningless as there were never enough forces to effectively seal the Laos/Cambodia border. "If you are able, save for them a place inside of you and save one backward glance when you are leaving for the places they can no longer go. Be not ashamed to say you loved them, though you may or may not have always. Take what they have taught you with their dying and keep it with your own. And in that time when men decide and feel safe to call the war insane, take one moment to embrace those gentle heroes you left behind.

Written by Major Michael O'Donnell, a helicopter pilot serving in the Vietnam War. He was later posted as Missing In Action during a rescue mission and in 1978 was declared legally dead.
